THE HOUSE OF FROST

Edinburgh and outside North Berwick. United Kingdom.

The jet landed at Edinburgh Airport in the early morning. Jess and David thanked the crew and made their way to the parking lot. As they walked, David removed a key fob from his suit pocket and pressed the button. A nearby BMW M5 chirped.

“Beautiful car,” Jess said, as she admired the smooth lines of the charcoal-gray sedan.

“Thank you. Cars are an expensive hobby of mine.”

“How many do you own?”

“Far too many.”

He pressed the key fob again, and the sedan’s trunk popped open. Before he approached the rear of the vehicle, David opened the passenger door for Jess.

“Thank you,” she said, and she climbed into the car. The seats were even more luxurious than the ones on the plane.

David placed their bags in the trunk. He then closed the trunk and climbed into the driver’s seat a moment later.

“Tell me more about these houses,” Jess said.

David pressed the ignition button and the engine started.

“Do all supernatural beings belong to one?” she asked.

“Many don’t, but it’s much safer to align yourself with one. Of course, things have gotten calmer since the treaty.”

“What treaty?”

David put the BMW in gear and drove out of the airport parking lot.

“The supernatural community formed the council almost two hundred years ago. It comprises representatives from many of the noble houses. Every species is represented on the council — Nephilim, vampires, witches, werewolves, and shapeshifters. Their first act was the passage of a treaty, which made the killing of other supernatural creatures punishable by death. They’ve never enforced the treaty equally, though. That’s been one of the problems.”

“How so?” Jess asked.

David glanced at the side-view mirror and then merged onto the road that would take them out of the city and along the coast of Scotland.

“Unfortunately, not all supernatural beings are seen as equals,” he said. “Even though the council is comprised of all species, they still often look the other way when someone kills a member of a perceived lower class. It’s created a lot of tension and accusations, as I’m sure you can imagine.”

“Which classes would those be?”

“Werewolves and shapeshifters, for example. For whatever reason, their kind has always been viewed as less than desirable, especially the wolves. Witches are a notch above them. Although most grand houses have one, their status as humans holds them back in the eyes of many. Vampires would be next, and the Nephilim see themselves at the top of the food chain, whether or not that’s accurate or fair. Of course, not everyone would agree with those rankings. Ask a werewolf or a shapeshifter, and they’ll put themselves at the top. They feel that other creatures’ inability to change into another form makes them inferior.”

“Convenient for you as one of the Nephilim,” Jess said.

“I didn’t make the class rules, nor do I believe in them. The truth is the council is corrupt. It’s only as strong as its current members, and they all fear Charles Webb. The one thing that has kept them somewhat in line is they fear Sera Frost just as much as Webb, maybe even more.
